We just finished a very successful expedition to Bouvetøya in the South Atlantic Ocean. What an incredible trip! Depsite all the challenges, the team overcome each of them. We made contact with 102.000 persons during our 15 day stay. We encountered harsh conditions, snow, and wind sometimes was so strong we could barely walk outdoor. Bouvetøya is a beautiful island, but is known for its remoteness and unpredictable weather. The team worked well together and we're proud of having made 100k contacts under these conditions. Today everyone is safely back on the vessel and we're bound for Cape Town this weekend. Thanks to everyone who supported us and who was in the pileup!

STATUS / OPERATIONAL UPDATE-  07 March 2026:

The team is doing well on Bouvet, we are all in good spirit as we see the camp build up take place and operation is now going well.

We have all tents and antennas installed at this point. We have 4 Yagis installed, WIMO monobanders on 15 and 20 + two dual banders on 17/12 and today a 5 element monobander on 10m. We have 18m top loaded spiderpole on 160m, full-size on 40m using Spiderbeam poles. We run in band operation on 40,20,17,15,12 and 10 using our ICOM radios and ACOM amplifiers also supported by DX Engineering hardware.

We also have a FLEX Aurora 500W radio setup. We have 6 stations and amplifiers with 500W to 1 kW + power output, and we have enough fuel to run high power throughout the operation.

On Top Band you should look for us as we are QRV every night through our sunrise. Propagation on some bands is challenging, and they close earlier than expected. All yagis have excellent take off towards EU/Asia and also NA. Our camp is located at the upper area where we planned to setup a NA camp. There is no camp in the lower area due to the wildlife. Since we visited Bouvet last time the global warming has made the glacier recede, so the seals and penguins now occupy a large area of Cape Fie even as much as 3-400 meter uphill. In some ten years from now, this area might be out of reach for any expedition!

The weather at Bouvet is windy and cold and it is challenging to keep the antenna farm up. While we have reached our max setup, we see increased maintenance, things that must be fixed and repaired.

We had several days with high wind, snow and rather cold days. Setting up antennas in this weather has been challenging, but fun! Today is an exceptional day with no wind and blue sky, a truly very nice day at the island that also allowed us to take a hike and do some sightseeing.

Our logs will be uploaded once a day and you can check the log at M0OXO website. We expect to run another 7-9 days at full setup before we start planning how to gradually extract from the island.

3YOK Bouvet DXpedition - local connection, Adrian; KO8SCA

 The 2026 Bouvet Island DXpedition is set to take place in late February 2026, with a team of amateur radio operators planning to activate one of the most remote and coveted locations in the world. Presently scheduled to start around 2/21/26 2/28/26.

Central NY's own Adrian, KO8SCA is a co-leader on this DXpedition. Adrian, from Skaneateles is quite an experienced DXpeditioner. Check out his list on QRZ! 

This DXpedition has a $1.65 million budget, a rented icebreaker from IceTugs, and a helicopter for transport to get them back and forth to the support ship. This will be a three-week effort on Bouvet, with operations beginning as soon as weather allows. Two camps—including one dedicated to North America—will maximize QSOs, making this a must-work event for DXers worldwide.

As of March 3, 14:45 UTC. 

Finally, a nice sunny day here on the island. Both camps are safe and secure with 8 tents in total. One camp is located at the NA focus location.

Equipment is - 10 ICOM 7610 radios and 10 amps in the camps- ACOM 2020s,1400s & 500s.

We have antennas for all bands in the air except 10m. We are operating 4 stations now from 500W to 1 kW+. Two yagis  for 20m + one for 17/12, 1 18m top-loaded 160m, 1 full size 80m verticals.

Tomorrow the 10m antennas will go up, with an another for 17/12.

Expect 160m every night as long as the antenna holds up. We do have spares!

Tonight we plan 160,80,40 & 30m.

Expected operation till March 18 or 20, weather dependent.

Y0K Bouvet

''We arrived at Bouvetøya this morning, but the weather and sea state is still not favourable for us to start going onshore today. During our daily meeting today with the captain, pilots and expedition crew, we discussed the weather forecast. During the last few days, we have stayed in an area with adverse weather and waves up to 8-10 meter, which is the reason for us slowing down the speed. The vessel is handling the sea very well and we are all satisfied with that. We are now currently looking into a weather window on Saturday and Sunday, and as long as the conditions don’t change it is likely we will make an effort to go onshore this weekend. The pilots and crew are ready and confident in the machine, and we will now start our final preparations.

At this stage we cannot tell when we will be on the air. The main priority is to focus on the upcoming weather windows, get the gear and people onto the island and secure the camp with tents and provisions – before the radio/antenna installation starts. Our pilot James KB2FMH will inform when we are QRV.

Winter Field Day 2026 - Jan. 24-25, 2026

Winter Field Day is an exciting annual event for amateur radio enthusiasts, taking place on the last full weekend of January. It offers a unique opportunity for radio operators to set up field operations in remote locations, enabling them to connect with other participants worldwide. You may choose to participate solo or get your your friends, family, or whole club involved. Winter Field Day is organized by the Winter Field Day Association. The association strongly believes that ham radio operators should practice portable emergency communications in winter environments. This is because freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and other hazards pose unique operational concerns.

The 30-hour operational period starts at 1600 UTC on Saturday (11 am EST), the 24th, and ends at 21:59 UTC on Sunday, the 25th (4:59 pm EST). Stations may begin setting up no earlier than 16:00 UTC (11 pm EST) on the Friday before.

The Winter Field Day event aims to help participants improve their preparedness for disasters and enhance their operational abilities in adverse conditions. Amateur radio operators have the freedom to use frequencies on the HF, VHF, or UHF bands while employing voice, CW, and digital transmissions. The event designates specific objectives to encourage a diverse range of activities, including the use of non-commercial power sources, the deployment of multiple antennas, establishing satellite contacts, and more.

Meteor Scatter QSO Party on December 12 and 13

 

Operators/Monitors Wanted for Meteor Scatter QSO Party December 12-13

HamSCI — the Ham Radio Citizen Science Investigation program — is looking for “ping jockeys,” or ham radio operators who enjoy making contacts via meteor scatter (MS), to take part in its Meteor Scatter QSO Party during the Geminids meteor shower on December 12 and 13, 2025. Operation will take place on the 10-meter and 6-meter bands only (28.145 and 50.260 MHz), using the MSK144 digital protocol. The event is a combination on-air contest and data collection for what HamSCI describes as an experiment “to analyze the feasibility of HF meteor scatter for future scientific research.”

HamSCI pointed out that little research has been done on 10-meter meteor scatter, due to past symbol rate limits imposed by the FCC. Those limits were removed in early 2024. 

The group is looking for both active operators (seeking and making contacts) and passive monitors, recording .WAV files of MS contacts and uploading them to PSK Reporter. Researchers will collect contact data from both 10 and 6 meters and will analyze that data offline, using PSK Reporter raw data, operator contact logs and .WAV files.

HamSCI says the best operating times will be between 8 PM and 8 AM local time, and suggests announcing CQs on “Ping Jockey Central” (especially for 10 meters) and the groups.io page of the Front Range Six Meter Group (especially for 6 meters).

 Once again W2LGA will be set up inside the Derrick Boat at the H Lee White Maritime Museum in Oswego New York for the International Lighthouse / Lightship Weekend event. We will be there both Saturday and Sunday August 16th and 17th. This will mark the 18th year W2LGA has participated in this event. I will be operating on most Amateur Bands using CW, Phone, and some FT8. Time of operation will be from 9am until 5pm both days weather permitting! Special Event Station - VE Day 80th anniv. - Thurs. 5/8/25

  VE DAY 80TH ANNIVERSARY - ELDRED, PENNSYLVANIA 

  The McKean County Amateur Radio Club will be operating a special event station on Thursday, May 8, 2025 at the Eldred WWII Museum, operating as W3VV to commemorate and celebrate the VE 80th anniversary, while also showing our gratitude to the men, women and children who dedicated their lives to the war effort.

  The radio club will be providing a public demonstration at the Eldred World War II museum while making voice and morse code contacts over the air with other amateur radio operators in North America, Europe and world-wide!  The amateur radio community will also learn about the Eldred World War II museum in Pennsylvania, its collections and mission. There will be a certificate available to those that make a successful radio contact with the station.

Meteor Scatter QSO Party 2025

 Did you ever experience a meteor scatter propogation? Its a pretty neat experience. Check out these events coming up later this month and beyond.

HamSCI – The Ham Radio Science Citizen Investigation is preparing for a series of meteor scatter (MS) experiments later this year. The target storms are in August (Perseids) and December (Geminids). Preparation and testing are underway now. This is a combination 'special event' and a contest to generate contact data during meteor scatter events using 10 meters and 6 meters. Contest rules will be released shortly.

Currently, we need operators to be active (i.e., CQ-ing) on MSK144; or passive, if possible, reporting via PSK Reporter as 'monitors'. The best times are early morning hours prior to 10M opening to F2 propagation. Meteor scatter propagation occurs well below F2 and is supported in or near the E layer where the meteor ionization tracks occur. Saturday mornings are being used regularly to announce and coordinate 10M contacts using Ping Jockey Central. Announcements are also made on the Front Range Six Meter groups.io due to the substantial number of meteor scatter operators in that group.

To be successful, this effort needs operators, both active and passive. The upcoming April-Lyrids shower is an excellent time to set up your equipment and join with other operators preparing for the events later this year. If you do not have the time to be active, at least set up passive reporting. PSK Reporter currently has scarce 10M MSK144 monitors; so we need to increase those numbers during the early morning hours.

The best Lyrid times are around midnight and early morning hours, peaking April 21-22, but also for several days before and after the peak dates. We expect large numbers of 10M and 6M MSK144 operators to be both active and passive during the Lyrid events.

Parks on the Air - Erie Canal Bicentennial Celebration - Sept. 2025

 September 16-25, 2005 - Parks on the Air - Erie Canal Bicentennial Celebration 

The Erie Canal turns 200 in 2025! We are excited to invite you and your club to join us for a special Parks on the Air (POTA) activation of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor (POTA US-6532) in September. The event will take place during the World Canal Conference which is being hosted this year in Buffalo, New York, to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the completion of the Erie Canal!

 

Experience the canal that transformed America and join amateur radio operators from across New York State as we activate the Heritage Corridor from September 16-25.While the World Canal Conference officially kicks off on Sunday, September 21, at Canalside in Buffalo, there are also pre-conference events across the state starting on Thursday, September 16.

 

We're looking for as many clubs and individuals as possible to plan POTA activations within the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor (US-6532) over the 10 days. For those activating along the canal (which is encouraged), the Empire State Trail (US-8098) is a common two-fer you may wish to include. The Heritage Corridor is a large area that also includes Cayuga and Seneca Lakes, and even north of Albany, so regardless of where you are in the state, there are a lot of eligible locations and possible n-fers (activating from multiple POTA entities at once).

 

We invite all surrounding amateur radio clubs and individual operators to join us in promoting Amateur Radio and Parks on the Air, as we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal! Clubs are encouraged to make this event their own, engaging members and newer hams to participate, possibly creating a custom QSL card, and promoting their activity across social media.

100th anniversary of Grimeton Radio Station transmission - 12/1/24

 

On December 1st, 1924, the VLF transmitter, with call sign "SAQ" at Grimeton Radio Station, was put into commercial operation, with transmissions across the Atlantic ocean, to the receiving station at Riverhead and the replying transmitter station at Rocky Point, both on Long Island, NY, USA.

On December 1st 2024, one hundred years later, SAQ will air to commemorate this event. The unique Alexanderson alternator from 1924, with the call sign SAQ, is scheduled for one transmission over the antenna on VLF 17.2 kHz CW.

Background: In 1895 the Italian physicist and later Nobel Prize winner Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937) had realised wireless telegraphy, i.e. the possibility of transmitting information with the help of radio waves.

The communication across the Atlantic did not function well during World War I and the need of telegram traffic with America was great. The Swedish Parliament therefore decided in 1920 that a Swedish long wave transmitting station and a receiving station should be built under the direction of the “Telegrafverket”.

Important for the location of the establishment was that the wave propagation path was run across open waters – south of Norway and north of Denmark and Scotland. In Grimeton, east of Varberg, the open landscape gave free way for the radio waves out towards the Western Sea and besides, the name was easy to pronounce for Americans.

The Great Radio Station was built during the years 1922-1924.

INTERNATIONAL LIGHTHOUSE AND LIGHTSHIP WEEKEND– 2024 EDITION

Fred , W2LGA again operated from Oswego Harbor. Here is his report: 

We set up inside the Derrick Boat and it could not have worked out better!! We had more visitors than I have ever had during this event. Setup was super easy and not being hampered by the weather really made it nice!! Charlie Abbot helped set upon Saturday morning and we were on the air by 8am! . We made over 125 total contacts by phone and another 76 contacts via digital modes!! We contacted 18 lighthouses and 2 lightships. Saturday we contacted a lighthouse in France and Sunday we got a lighthouse in Sydney Harbor in Australia!! 

Visitors were from the area as well as one couple from Connecticut that wanted to see the museum as well as the Amateur Radio set up … the lady used to be a “Ham” when she was young and saw the announcement about the set up on the internet. The highlight was a family of 5 who stopped in Saturday afternoon. Two adults and three children. The kids were about 6-10 years old and I let them work the radio!! The youngest called “CQ Lighthouse” and he got a return call from a Canadian light house on Prince Edward Island. I walked the lil guy through the contact but he handled the mike the whole time!!! He was beyond excited!! I even let him enter the contact in the log!! Already looking forward to next year’s events

International Lighthouse / Lightship Weekend Event - 8/17-18/2024

 

Good afternoon all,

 Once again, I will be setting up a portable station at the West Pierhead Lighthouse in Oswego, NY. I hope to be operating from inside the Derrick Boat near the museum itself …. If not I will be directly out front once again. 😊

My tentative hours of operation are from 8am until 4pm both Saturday and Sunday August 17th and 18th. Longer if they will have me!! The 48 hour event runs from 8pm Friday until 8pm Sunday EDT. I will be on most bands using SSB, CW, and FT8 whenever possible. I will try to stay in the General frequency range for the most part. It is hoped to have over 500 lighthouses and lightships registered on the website (illw.net) but regardless …. It will be fun!!

East Coast Reflector is holding a "Meet and Greet" - Orchard Park NY - 6/8/24

 The East Coast Reflector is holding a "Meet and Greet" on June 8, 2024. 

This will be held at Chestnut Ridge Park in Orchard Park, NY.  This will be held at Martin's Lodge from 1 PM to 8 PM. Dinner will be from 3 PM to 6 PM.  Cost is a donation of $15 per person.  There will be door prizes and a 50/50 drawing.  Talk in will be on 146.520.  Food available will be hot dogs, hamburgers, cheese burgers and BBQ beans.  There will besome drinks available.  Last year, hams came from throughout Eastern USA. Tailgating will be allowed and clubs are invited to bring along several pamphlets on their clubs and membership applications. Hope to see you all there!

Solar Eclipse QSO Party Seeks Amateurs

 

ARRL is proud to partner with HamSCI to help promote participation in the Solar Eclipse QSO Party (SEQP). SEQPs are a series of global experiments -- and you can be a part of them. Solar eclipses will pass across the continental United States on October 14, 2023, and April 8, 2024.

During these celestial events, you can join thousands of fellow amateurs as part of the largest crowd-sourced event for ham radio scientific exploration. The SEQP is part of the Festivals of Eclipse Ionospheric Science and is for learning more about how the ionosphere works.

All radio amateurs need to do is operate using any mode and any band for all or part of the day, then upload their logs. Participation can be from anywhere; you don't need to be near the path of the eclipse to contribute valuable data. You don't even have to be a licensed ham to participate in the experiment (only to transmit).

2023 International Lighthouse / Lightship Weekend - 8/19-20

International Lighthouse / Lightship Weekend - August 19-20

A few years ago the International Association of Lighthouse Keepers decided to have an annual open day for lighthouses all around the world to encourage visitors to visit at their lighthouses. They decided that no better day could be decided upon other than the Sunday of the ILLW. This move has been highly successful as the media have become involved in quite a few of the countries involved in the event. The ILLW takes place on the 3rd full weekend in August each year and attracts over 500 lighthouse entries located in over 40 countries. It is one of the most popular international amateur radio events in existence probably because there are very few rules and it is not the usual contest type event. It is also free and there are no prizes for contacting large numbers of other stations. There is little doubt that the month of August has become "Lighthouse Month" due largely to the popularity and growth of the ILLW.

This year’s event takes place on the 3rd full weekend in August so if you haven’t done so already, find a lighthouse nearby and get a group together or do it solo and fire up a lighthouse station. In most cases if you don’t intend operating from within the lighthouse itself or one of its cottages, you really don’t need to get any approval. For the 16th consecutive year, The 3916 Nets will be presenting The Santa Net on 3.916 MHz. Good girls and boys can talk to Santa Claus, via amateur radio, nightly at 7:00 PM (Central) starting Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, through Christmas Eve, December 24th.

We enjoy helping young people and their families have a shared Christmas experience that they'll always remember.

Pete Thomson (KE5GGY), of The 3916 Nets, commented on The 3916 Santa Net. He said, "Christmastime is a very special time for our nets every year. We enjoy helping young people and their families have a shared Christmas experience that they'll always remember. And we're thrilled to introduce young people to the excitement of amateur radio."

Youngsters can talk to "Santa at The North Pole" via strategically placed operators who relay the voice of Santa. Thomson said that The Santa Net is a team effort that involves the efforts of a number of 3916 Net members. He said, "In our first year, we connected 10 kids to Santa on Ham Radio and it's grown steadily since. This year, we're expecting over 1,000 children to participate."

Third party rules and regulations apply. The Santa Nets are presented annually by The 3916 Nets. The Rag Chew Crew, The Tailgaters and The Freewheelers are all amateur radio nets that meet on 3.916 MHz nightly. Can't talk to Santa on HF? In Northern Colorado or anywhere in the world? Join us starting November 27 to December 9, 2022 to talk to Santa on the radio. International Museum Ships Weekend - June 4-5

 International Museum Ships Weekend is Saturday June 4 and Sunday June 5 this year.

 We will be activating the US Army Tug LT-5 located at the H. Lee White Maritime Museum in Oswego, NY on both dates from 11AM until 5PM.

Ham radio stations will be setup in an attempt to contact as many of the other museum ships around the country as possible.

 He LT-5 is one of the last remaining tug boats used in the Normandy Invasion during World War 2 in June 1944.
