New Radio System coming for the New York State Thruway

The New York State Thruway Authority is in the process of upgrading their statewide radio communications system. NYSTA awarded L3Harris the contract for a 700/800 mhz P25 Phase 2 trunked system in January of 2025. The radio system supports the NYS Police Troop T, NYSTA maintenance and local tow truck operations. The present UHF system has been in service for over 50 years covering the 570 mile roadway.

The new multiband L3Harris mobile radios will support communications on both the legacy UHF system and the new P25 network, which should allow a smooth transition for authority personnel. New equipment installations began last year and should be completed in 2027.

PRESS RELEASE:

L3Harris Technologies (NYSE:LHX) has received a contract award to upgrade the New York State Thruway Authority’s critical communications infrastructure, including voice and data connectivity, throughout its 570-mile jurisdiction.

L3Harris will deliver Two47 Base Stations to roughly 40 sites spanning New York City to the western border with Canada, delivering secure, interoperable communications through reliable, agile networks. L3Harris will also deliver more than 1,800 XL Series radios and provide maintenance and system support. The award followed a competitive procurement process and is potentially worth more than $150 million over 20 years.

“There is a significant need for high-speed voice and data communications throughout the Thruway system, particularly during periods of high traffic or adverse weather, and our solutions provide New York with the flexibility to meet its evolving needs over the next 20 years,” said Kevin Pietrzak, President, Public Safety and Professional Communications, L3Harris. “For three decades, Thruway communications have remained resilient through everything from terrorist attacks to natural disasters, and we look forward to continuing this support.”

This network, composed of L3Harris’ latest critical-communications solutions, provides an open-system architecture that enables transportation organizations the flexibility to tailor to regionally specific needs. It will enhance interoperability with transportation and emergency responders throughout the 570-mile system. (source: L3Harris press release)

Great Radio publication!

I recently received my December issue of The Spectrum Monitor (TSM). I really look forward to getting this publication each month! I am a charter subscriber since its beginning in 2014. It is very similar to the former Monitoring Times magazine which discontinued publication in 2013.
Check out TSM on their web site at: http://www.thespectrummonitor.com/index.aspx

TSM is usually around 100 pages and is packed with the latest on Amateur Radio, Shortwave, Scanning, Satellites, Radio/TV, Vintage radio, etc. The news and articles are always up to date and relevant. TSM is available only in PDF format and can be read on any device capable of opening a PDF file. I read TSM both on my tablet and PC. I also occasionally print out interesting articles that I might need for future reference in the shack.

The TSM publisher, Ken Reitz KS4ZR, is the former managing editor, features editor, columnist and feature writer for Monitoring Times. As well as a former feature writer and columnist for several other publications. TSM has some very experienced and talented writers that do a great job of covering many interesting topics each month! (learn more about the TSM staff here: http://www.thespectrummonitor.com/about-us.aspx )

Check out an older SWLing blog post review of TSM: https://swling.com/blog/2014/12/the-spectrum-monitor-only-24-for-a-years-subscription/

Changes to CNY Radio Reference Scanner Feed of Local Repeaters

http://www.radioreference.com/apps/db/?stid=36

Exciting Changes to my Radio Reference Scanner Feed of Local Repeaters!
Verona, NY - January 18, 2017

First, some background. I provide a streaming audio feed to the Radio Reference website. The
source of the audio is a scanner at my home, which has many local amateur radio repeaters
programmed in to it. Among them are the following: 146.91, 145.33, 146.775, 147.39, 146.67, 146.955 and the 449.925 on the statewide UHF system. There are no public service frequencies programmed, as radio reference has many alternative feeds for that.

Interesting AOR AR-DV1 SDR receiver for digital voice modes

The AOR AR-DV1 is the FIRST multi-mode digital voice receiver to receive and decode virtually ALL popular digital modes including: MOTOTRBO, DMR, dPMR, APCO P25 Phase I, NXDN, Icom D-Star, Digital CR, Yaesu, Kenwood®, and Alinco EJ-47U as well as conventional analog signals.

The AOR AR-DV1B wideband communications SDR receiver covers 100 kHz to 1300 MHz (less cellular on U.S. consumer "B" version) in traditional analog modes (SSB, CW, AM, FM, S-FM, W-FM) as well as various digital modes. In fact, we know of no other radio in this category that can decode Icom's D-Star mode, Yaesu's new C4FM mode, Alinco's digital mode, NXDN (note: 6.25 kHz only), P25 Phase 1, etc. Interesting features include:  2000 Memories (in 40 banks of 50), Memory Scan, AM Synchronous Detection, Noise Reduction, Notch, Digital Data Display, Clock, Calendar, Alarm, Timer. The SD/SDHC jack supports logging functions. There is also a micro USB port. This radio will support field firmware updating. High performance is achieved since the receiver employs direct conversion below 18 MHz and triple conversion superheterodyne above 18 MHz.

With this breakthrough development, AOR offers the monitoring community a powerful new tool that receives multiple digital formats in addition to traditional analog operations in a compact receiver built for high sensitivity and selectivity.

Monitoring Aircraft frequencies

Monitoring air traffic can be pretty interesting. The Air bands are available on many radios today. You will find its not just scanners but many Amateur radio transceivers have these bands available as well. You can monitor commercial airliners, private aircraft, as well as military aircraft. The closer you are to major commercial airport, the better your chances are. You can also listen to private aircraft around CNY on their UNICOM frequency of 122.800 MHz (AM). You can also see live aircraft tracking info on-line at http://flightaware.com/live/airport/KSYR . It is pretty cool to listen and watch the movements from on-line radar tracking.

Some basic guidance for Aircraft Monitoring

One-Sided Conversations:  Because aircraft fly high above the ground, their transmissions have much more range than the ground stations with whom they're talking. This means that only the airborne side of most conversations will be heard. Is this a problem? You miss very little in these conversations because pilots are required to repeat back to controllers any instructions or frequencies that they are given. In fact, hearing only the aircraft has tremendous advantages. It helps the listener to avoid mix ups among simulcast ground stations, and is a terrific help in isolating military aircraft from other traffic.
Frequency Bands Used:  Although the air band is 108-137 MHz, almost all civilian voice communications are above 118 MHz. In addition, the military has 138-150 MHz and 225-400 MHz. (remember AM)
Sources of Information:  The best place for you to get information is the same place where the pilots go. Web sites like fltpln.com, airnav.com and OurAirports.com give you frequencies and all kinds of other airport information.Other resources that will get you up to speed quickly:

…and if you don’t have a radio that is capable of receiving these frequencies there is always the Internet!

Public Service Monitoring today.....

Monitoring public service communications is rapidly changing. Many local, state and federal agencies have gone to Digital Radio Systems. Cayuga, Oswego, Onondaga and Madison counties have switched over to the Central New York Interoperable Communications Consortium (CNYICC) Network, which is a P25 digital trunking system. Analog radio and scanning receivers will not properly receive the audio from this system.

Don't worry too much, because there are several options.

Scanner listeners in Cayuga, Oswego, Onondaga and Madison counties can use a digital trunking receiver to listen to this system. Scanners such as the Uniden BCD 396X/T and 996X/T, Uniden Home Patrol and the Radio Shack Pro-197(same as GRE PSR-600) are excellent radios for listening to the new CNYICC system.

There is also an analog simulcast of Cayuga County Fire/EMS dispatch that you can still receive on 453.41250 mhz. Also Onondaga County Fire dispatch simulcasts on 453.850, 82.5 PL and EMS on 460.025, 82.5 PL. Unfortunately Law Enforcement and Municipal services are not simulcast on any analog frequencies.

Another option is live Scanner feeds from the Internet on your personal computer. Internet feeds can be found at http://www.broadcastify.com/ as well as http:/www.radioreference.com. Hams can also keep track of their favorite repeaters when away from the radio. One local feed from Stan; N2STC covers Oneida County (http://www.broadcastify.com/listen/feed/11348/?rl=rr). There are also several other feeds covering different areas of upstate NY.

Cayuga County changeover to Digital P25 system

Cayuga County Fire and Police dispatching through the Cayuga County 911 Center has cut over from analog to the new Digital Radio System as of 12/5/2012. Cayuga County has joined the Central New York Interoperable Communications Consortium (CNYICC) Network, along with Madison, Oswego and Onondaga counties.

Scanner listeners will now need a digital trunking receiver in order to listen to this system. Scanners such as the Uniden BCD 396X/T and 996X/T, Uniden Home Patrol and the Radio Shack Pro-197(same as GRE PSR-600) are excellent radios for listening to the new system.

(There is an analog simulcast of CC Fire/EMS dispatch that you can still receive on 453.41250 mhz)
