Pumpkin Patrol 2018

The Pumpkin Patrol will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday October 30-31st for Bridges on the New York State Thruway.

This event contributes to the safety of travelers on the New York State Thruway. It is a statewide event and is held in cooperation with the New York State Troopers and Amateur radio groups.

The Pumpkin Patrol was initiated as a volunteer effort in 1976 by Katherine St. Jacques in Fort Johnson, Montgomery County.  Ms. St. Jacques was talking to a truck driver on her citizens band radio when the windshield of his vehicle was struck by an object thrown from an overpass.  The driver sustained injuries from the broken glass of his windshield.  St. Jacques and two companions decided to stand watch on the three over passes that crossed the Thruway in the Fort Johnson area. The State Police assumed control of the Pumpkin Patrol in 1990 as part of the State Police crime prevention effort.  More than 300 volunteers will participate in this year’s safety efforts.

Upstate Counties participating:

This is a two night public service event to be held on October 30th and 31st from 19:00 to 21:00 hours. The chairman is seeking Amateur Radio Operators who can dedicate one or both evenings. Operators are encouraged to work in pairs and non-ham friends, family or pets are encouraged to accompany them. Teams will operate from their vehicles (no walking or standing required) and repeater coverage (146.31/91) is generally okay for handheld use although mobile units are encouraged.

If you are interested in participating for the Onondaga County portion of this event, please contact Al May, WA2KFV at or by phone at 315-633-9280. Please specify your availability for one night or two and provide a contact e-mail and phone number. If you have a location preference, please let me know when you register, assignments are made on a first-come, first served basis with consideration as to where you live and what bridge you covered in the past.

Monroe County - RARA
Eighteen (18) ham operators are needed for this after dark safety patrol. We will provide the eyes and ears for the New York State Police in an effort to keep pranksters from throwing objects off bridges into the path of motorists below. We will cover as many bridges in Monroe County as possible and coordinate with neighboring counties as needed.

Hams will provide safety communications by informing Net Control of any suspicious activity. This type of activity can be, but is not limited to, stopping on overpass, same vehicle passing bridge location repeatedly, pedestrians on bridge, objects thrown from vehicle or by pedestrians. Net Control will communicate with NYSP. Additionally, we will have rovers that will bring refreshments to those watching bridges. More info at:
